Hopping Into a District Win

The Wolverines took on the Kress Kangaroos Wednesday night, earning another district win with a score of 73-41.

“I felt pretty confident going into the game,” senior Alex Alvarez said. “I knew it was going to be a good game for us, and I knew they would challenge us early.”

The game began with starters junior JJ Jaramillo, freshman Froylan Agundiz, freshman Kaleb Castillo, Alvarez, and junior Isaiah Tovar. Jaramillo jumped the ball. The game’s starting points were scored, and the Wolverines went into the second quarter losing 18-21.

“They came up early on us, and I remember just being calm. I didn’t really worry about the lead that they had,” Alvarez said. “I think the turning point was when we realized that they wanted it, and we just had to want it more.”

In the second quarter, the Wolverines managed to pull ahead and went into half-time with a nine-point lead.

“I was excited to see what we could do and also see how disciplined we were to come back from being down early in the game,” Alvarez said.

At the end of the third quarter, the Wolverines were winning by 24 points with a score of 62-38. Most of these points were scored by Jarmillo.

“JJ played the best. He came out firing,” Alvarez said. “Once he starts hitting, he will not stop.”

The whole team came together and played very well.

“They played well as a team and had good defense,” spectator Gavin Gonzales said.

Teacher and avid fan Gwen Parish had similar thoughts.

“The boys did a great job showing improvement and toughing it out to come home with a win,” Parish said.

The final score of the night was 73-41. This was a win that brings high hopes for the next district game tonight.

“We’ve struggled this year as far as working the ball around, and Nazareth has really good defense,” Alvarez said. “They showed us how good they were the first time around, we saw and experienced their defense so I think we’re ready this time as long as we work the offense right we could do well.”
