Showcasing Leadership: Alex Alvarez

Showcasing Leadership: Alex Alvarez

“A good leader will bring people together in their differences and have them accomplish something in unison,” Alex’s and Hannah’s older sister and alum Kamryn Alvarez said.

That is exactly what senior Alex Alvarez has done throughout his high school career, and that is why last six weeks, he was nominated for the Leadership segment of L.E.A.P.S.  Alex felt very good about this accomplishment.

“I felt very honored and excited to receive the leadership award,” A. Alvarez said. “There’s a lot of leaders in this school, so to be selected was a great feeling.”

Alex has had a diversified leadership experience. Whether he was class president, head drum major, or National Honors Society president, Alex has always excelled in leading people. Alex has done a great job of inspiring others to be leaders.

“Having someone to encourage, motivate, and cheer you on can make all the difference in your success and make an impact on your life,” eighth grader Ethan Mosqueda said. “Alex has done this for me and others.”

Alex’s way of going about things is what makes him such a good leader.

“He stands out from other leaders by doing the right thing even when no one is watching,” junior Isabella Gonzalez said.

Alex has been taught to always act as if someone was watching him. Because of this, Alex is the same person everywhere he goes, and that is something that has helped him tremendously in his leadership career.

I modeled my leadership after her. She led everywhere she could: she was drum major, she was class president, she was Valedictorian. It was good for me to experience that, and I hope that Hannah, who is a freshman, looks to me like I look to Kamryn.

“Leaders are a point of reference in a lot of ways and it is important that you build a relationship of trust, communication, and positivity,” K. Alvarez said. “At times a leader is the only person people feel comfortable with and if a leader builds their relationships on these things it makes getting the job done way easier.”

Alex is a great leader, but every great leader has a role model and Alex’s is his big sister Kamryn.

“Kamryn was a senior when I was in eighth grade. I remember walking up and down the halls and seeing her all the time and wanting to be like her,” A. Alvarez said. “I modeled my leadership after her. She led everywhere she could: she was drum major, she was class president, she was Valedictorian. It was good for me to experience that, and I hope that Hannah, who is a freshman, looks to me like I look to Kamryn.”

Kamryn was an amazing person to look up to.

“She always knew what to do in a situation and always knew the best way to succeed in everything that she did,” A. Alvarez said. “She’s a strong-willed person, and that’s something I admire. She would always try her best in everything she did and was always optimistic.”

Alex tries his best to be like Kamryn, and she is proud of the person he is becoming.

“I see Alex as a leader by the way we speaks to others. He has a way of being calm but also stern in his speeches, and I feel like that not only motivates people to keep going, but it also gives people opportunity to show Alex respect,” K. Alvarez said. “Another great quality Alex has is that he has a sense of humor. It’s always easier to follow a person if you know they can joke around every once and awhile, but Alex knows the difference between having fun and getting to work.”

Alex has always been a hard worker. This is an important trait in a leader, but arguably, the most important trait is remaining calm when faced with a challenge.

“Alex is a person that you can look up to in anything you do,” junior Xavyer Mosqueda said. “Alex is a good leader because he is going to look at the overall picture and look at the details that go into it at the same time.”

Looking at every detail and considering every effect is a huge part of decision making Alex demonstrates.

“Every decision Alex has made has been good for the group as a whole. Because of that, I have really grown to respect him through the years,” senior Gabi Garcia said.

Alex is kind, goofy, serious, calm, empathetic, genuine, intelligent, and hardworking. These traits are what make Alex such a good leader. Leaders are essential throughout life in its entirety and without people like Alex Alvarez the world would cease to function.

“Leadership helps people to communicate better, be more organized, show authority without begging for it and how to understand the needs of others,” K. Alvarez said.
