Is a Hotdog a Sandwich?

Grace McIver, Writer

There is a lifelong question of if a hotdog is a sandwich. The definition of a sandwich is “an item of food consisting of two pieces of bread with meat, cheese, or other filling between them.” The definition of a taco is a “dish consisting of a starch base one 3 sides, typically folded, filled with various mixtures, such as seasoned meat, beans, lettuce, and tomatoes.”

Thus, creating the idea that a hotdog is in fact not a sandwich, but it is closer to a taco.

A hotdog is something people eat at baseball games, picnics, and other events. A hotdog cannot be a sandwich because it does not have a piece of bread on top. That is what makes a sandwich a sandwich. It does have a lot of qualities that are like a sandwich, but it fails to have the key starch on top and bottom.

The hotdog bun sometimes comes apart on the bottom, but that does not change the fact that it is a 3-sided bun. That is the reason why it is most likely to be in the taco category. The concept of a taco is a starch-based shell with filling on the inside. Which is why it is reasonable to believe that a hotdog is closely defined as a taco.

Tacos and hotdogs are also eaten the same, but a hotdog is not eaten the same as a sandwich. When eating a hotdog, it is common to turn it to the side or just eat it exactly like a taco. With a sandwich, people just eat it like it is on the plate creating the idea that having a hotdog is the same as having a taco.

The hotdog is hard to put into one category because people want to believe it’s a sandwich, but with the definition of a sandwich being so far away from a hotdog, that is an unreasonable idea.

With that in mind, it is clear that a hotdog is not a sandwich nor will it ever be. A hotdog is a taco without a doubt because of the way a hotdog bun is made. Hotdogs and sandwiches are both enjoyed by a lot of people, but they are very different thing to eat.
